Coaching Defined

Coaching is working from a state of healthy functioning toward a future goal based upon a strategic action plan. Coaching uses powerful, open-ended questions to help the person being coached become the unique person they were created to be.

Coaching Distinctions

Since coaching is a relatively young field, it is important to make some very critical distinctions between it and other closely related, but often mistaken fields:

Counseling: Working from a state of pathology or dysfunction to healthy relating and functioning. Usually a past orientation to present.

Consulting: Transference of expertise in a given area from consultant to client.

Mentoring: Helping the mentee attain the level of being or maturity of the mentor. It is helping the one being mentored to take on the characteristics of the mentor, becoming more like him in the process.

Discipleship: Helping the disciple to become more like Christ. The discipler is usually farther along in maturity and models both the implementation of spiritual disciplines and the resulting fruit of the Spirit to help disciple reach a higher level of Christian maturity.

Friendship: A two-way relationship, without an agenda, based on a certain set of common values, similar traits, or personal preferences.
